Packers Ink Coach Mike McCarthy to One-Year Extension Through 2019

The Packers have signed head coach Mike McCarthy to a one-year extension through 2019 according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The move seems to be a band-aid so that McCarthy can avoid lame duck status but make no mistake-the Packers organization has put everyone on notice with the reassignment of GM Ted Thompson that changes will be made and no one’s job (save for Aaron Rodgers) is safe. McCarthy’s 12th season coaching the Pack was also the team’s first season since 2008 to end without a playoff berth.

On paper his .636 winning percentage looks good but it can be argued that McCarthy should have accomplished more with one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL under center in Green Bay. The loss of Rodgers to a broken collarbone this season exposed the dearth of talent on both sides of the ball, the unimaginative offensive game plan that McCarthy is primarily responsible for, and how poorly prepared backup QB Brett Hundley was. McCarthy could/should be on the hot seat next season and will likely be gone if the Packers do not make a deep playoff run.
