Can The Defense Be Fixed

B.J. Raji

What do the Packers do next? Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, Dom Capers and the coaching staff have a long offseason to figure what went wrong. I’m sure Packer Nation wants that question answered before the season starts. We’re not called Title town for nothing.

The easy answer is to fix the defense. Fire Dom Capers, trade Clay Matthews for a bunch of draft picks. Problem solved. I wish it was that easy. The problem is that doing either one of those things will fix the problem on defense. Lucky for you Packer Nation I have the answers.

Let’s breakdown the defense. The defensive line is in need of a major overhaul. I don’t see Raji or Pickett as coming back. Raji doesn’t fit the system anymore. Pickett is good, but he is turning 34, and that is 44 in football years. Jolly with his injury is all but gone. Mike Daniels is on his way to becoming a pro bowler, Josh Boyd is a raw talent. Jerel Worthy may never be the same, CJ Wilson is gone, Datone Jones needs to step it up next year.

The Linebacking corps once a strength is now a liability. Matthews can’t stay on the field, Hawk is consistent but not a play maker, Brad Jones is average, Lattimore needs work, Perry needs to stay healthy and become more of an impact player. Malumba showed promise but still raw. Barrington and Palmer are special team players.

The Secondary started as a strength then quickly became another weakness on this defense. Losing Casey Hayward was huge blow. Williams can’t make plays all himself. I doubt Shields will be back. Some team will show him the money. Bush is liability on defense. House played well then regressed quickly. Micah Hyde is an interesting prospect. He is a versatile player that can tackle and blitz. Our safeties are the weak link Jennings has to be cut, Richardson is another interesting prospect, again not a play maker. Banjo is a special teams player. Morgan Burnett is a second tier player. He needs a veteran alongside him.

Dom Capers needs to go through film of the season and his scheme in the offseason. He needs to start from the beginning break down the scheme and put players in position to win. Capers also needs to come up with a new scheme like Dick Labeau defensive coordinator from the Steelers did when he came up with the zone blitz.

The next thing Capers needs to do is go on scouting trips. He needs to find the players that make his defense into a ball hawking, aggressive, turnover machine. It is going to take work but this is the season to get it done.
