Well Packer Fans it’s that time again. It’s mock draft time where everyone can feel what it is like to be Ted Thompson. That’s right we can play General Manager. Of course, we don’t get blamed or fired if we draft the wrong guy.
What are the Packers needs? It’s all how you look at it. Offensive line needs an upgrade, a safety to replace Collins, a receiver to replace Jennings, or a running back. I know how about another Randall Cobb version two. So many choices, what’s a mock General Manager supposed to do?
Do you want to keep your franchise quarterback in Rodgers upright and healthy? Are Sherrod and Bulaga going to be healthy? I am no doctor but I am guessing Sherrod is done. According to rumours, Sherrod says, “he feels better.” The medical staff I hear aren’t sold that he can make it back. Let’s hope he does. If he doesn’t come back, The Packers would have drafted an offensive lineman three of the last four years in the first round. That is not good. It means there is no stability on the offensive line. Rodgers was sacked over fifty times last year. I am sure he was not happy being a tackling dummy. James Jones sure made it known he was not happy about Rodgers being sacked. A solid tackle like Justin Pugh from Syracuse could be the answer at our pick in the first round.
Rodgers also needs a security blanket to throw to. Just like Favre had with Chmura. Finley might be the answer. I know Packer fans what you’re thinking. The guy is a bust.
He has never lived up to potential. My answer is let us see what happens this year. Finley did break Paul Coffman’s tight end record for most catches for a Packer tight end in a year. There has been speculation we take Tyler Eifert Tight End from Notre Dame. He is a big, athletic, chuck full of potential. Where have I heard that before?
A running back for Rodgers would be a nice gift. Imagine if the Packers had a decent running back. Play action would be a nasty weapon for the Packer offense. This is a deep draft for running back. Eddie Lacy, Montee Ball, Johnathon Franklin all could be Packers. The running back position is a tough one. Curtis Martin the NFL Hall of Fame running back was drafted in the sixth round. The NFL draft bust pile is full of running backs.
There are other draft prospects like receivers who are dual threats like Randall Cobb. Interesting, but I believe there is not a need for more receivers. We should develop Boykin and others we have on the rooster.
Let’s move onto defense. I am guessing all the Packer starting defense are still seeing Kapernick run past them. They wake up screaming, “someone stop him!” What are the needs on defense? It is similar to the offense line. The defensive line was horrible in the playoff game no push from Raji, Pickett, Neal, or Wilson. We do have depth but we need a Gilbert Brown kind of guy. This draft has a couple of guys like him, but none worth picking in the first round.
Next up, are the line backers. The good news we will have Bishop, Williams, and Perry back. Will that make a difference? The Packers need to find a partner for Matthews. Someone who could let Matthews run wild chasing quarterbacks. Who doesn’t love to see the Claymaker’s new sack dance? Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M a nice edge pass rusher. But is he physical enough? Sorry Packer fans had to say it.
Last, but not least, the secondary. Thompson has never replaced Collins and it does hurt. Collins was on his way to a hall of fame career. Matt Elam, safety from Florida, nice range, physical, and good in coverage. The other is John Cyprien, safety, Florida International. He’s a little bit of a project. Tends to take chances, but he is physical, tough, and good in coverage. Cornerback I think is still is a strength even though Williams shoulder is not healing like he thought it would.
I leave it up to my fellow Packer Fans; who will you take with the first pick in the NFL draft?
