Packers Pass on Putting the Franchise Tag on Matt Flynn

Let the race to land free agent to be QB Matt Flynn begin.

As expected, the Packers did not place the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Flynn. So on March 13th, Flynn will become an unrestricted free agent.

There was some conjecture that the Packers would tag Flynn and try to trade him but apparently general manager Ted Thompson was worried about the risk of getting stuck with a salary of $14.4 million which is what it would have cost the club if they were unable to trade him.

Instead the Packers are likely to receive a high compensatory pick in the 2013 NFL draft. Expect a couple teams to be in the race to land Flynn, but the leaders out of the clubhouse are clearly the Dolphins, who with new coach Joe Philbin need a QB, and many say will make a major push for Flynn right when free agency starts.
