Packers All Pro safety Nick Collins out for season with neck injury

Packers safety Nick Collins is out for the season with a neck injury according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Collins, who returned to Green Bay at 1 p.m., was evaluated last night in a Charlotte hospital and it was determined he should not play the rest of the season. A course of treatment, including whether to have surgery, is still being evaluated.

“Nick was in the team meeting,” McCarthy said. “He told the team about it.”

Asked if there were any career-ending implications, McCarthy said, “They’re not far along in the evaluation process to make statements like that.”

The three-time Pro Bowl and All Pro selection was drafted in the second round from Bethune-Cookman in 2005.

Collins had started all 95 games of his NFL career, including 55 straight which led active NFL safeties.

Charlie Peprah, a six-year pro from Alabama, will replace Collins at free safety for the Packers.

The other starting safety, second-year man Morgan Burnett, generated seven solo tackles, one interception, a forced fumble, and two pass deflections on Sunday in Carolina.

Bad Day at Black Rock…Our best safety out for the year…Let’s hope the long-term prognosis is positive. What a freak injury.

Also, I noticed yesterday, that Chastin West was claimed by Jacksonville from our practice squad…Bad karma. Good fortune for Chastin, who by some accounts should have been on our 53-man roster.

Further thoughts on Nick Collins being placed on IR…

    1. Add Brandian Ross to the 53-man roster
    2. See if we can pick-up Anthony Levine, to add to the 53-man roster
    3. Add someone else to the 53-man roster

    Other thoughts:
    1. Since we lost Chastin West to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who should we add to the practice squad? Or as a more general question, what position-player should we add to the 53-man roster?
    2. Any updates on Tramon Williams?
    3. I’ve never heard anything further, from any source, about Johnny Jolly…does anyone know his status? Have the Packers totally given up on him?
    4. What is the extent of the surgery on Mike Neal? Is this another James Starks move, where he comes back from surgery in week 13 or 14?
    5. James Starks has clearly surpassed Ryan Grant as the number one running back.
    6. I do not understand keeping Saine on the practice squad. He’s fast, however, seems to consistently go down with the first hit.
    7. Will Matt Flynn be traded by the deadline?
    8. Cam Newton appears to be the real deal.
    9. What’s with giving up over 400 yards passing two weeks in a row.
10.Disappointing play calling by Mike McCarthy this weekend.
11.Offensive line was improved from week one. Improved running attack from 2010.
12.Donald Driver, one catch. Is this his “swan song” year?

  3. Russ Loede says:

    #5 and #8 are both dead-on.

#12: don’t count out Driver just yet.

Lastly, nothing new (all I read is he has a “chance” to practice on Wednesday) on Tramon Williams. Any update will be posted on the initial Wednesday injury report for Week three’s showdown against Chicago.

    Prediction: Packers 26 Bears 21
