Packers Release Three

The Packers announced that three players have been placed on waivers.

In addition to undrafted rookie offensive tackle Theo Sherman, third-year tight end Spencer Havner and wide receiver Brett Swain have been released.

A seventh-round pick out of San Diego State by the Packers in 2008, Swain appeared in 22 games during his time in Green Bay, including one start in 16 games last season. Swain caught six passes for 72 yards during the regular season and tied for the team lead with six special teams tackles during four post-season games.

Swain was active for just one of the Packers’ three preseason games.

Havner, a college linebacker who was converted to an H-back in the NFL, caught seven passes for 112 yards and four touchdowns in 2009, but his role has primarily been on special teams. Havner had 18 special teams tackles in 2009 but only appeared in six games in an injury-plagued 2010 season.

Waived by the Packers last September, Havner was claimed by the Detroit Lions where he played in five games before waived with an injury settlement (hamstring). The Packers re-signed Havner in Week 10, but the hamstring injury landed him on injured reserve in Week 13.

Frankly, no surprises here. Brett Swain will be picked-up by some other team as I believe will Havner. The tackle out of James Madison, may make someone’s taxi squad. He needs seasoning.

The final cuts will be interesting. Expect: Lee, Underwood, Brad Jones, Ricky Elmore and Schlauderoff to be cut…with the final two to be added to the taxi squad…assuming they do not get claimed by another team. I believe TT & MM do not want to lose Schlauderoff, but, he will (50% probability) be the final lineman cut.

This is a comment concerning the game tonight versus Kansas City…

Vic So’oto cemented his slot on the 53-man roster…I must say, Pat Lee had nine tackles. How were his pass coverage skills tonight?…Brad Jones played his way off the squad…and I believe Lattimore, Brandian Ross, and Gurley also made strong cases to be on the 53-man roster…

    The interesting moves will be:
    1. Do we keep all 5 TEs?
    2. Do we keep 6 WRs?
    3. Do we keep 2 or 3 QBs?
    4. Do we keep 1 or 2 FBs?
    5. Who makes the final 2 OLB spots (Assuming Zombo is PUP-listed)?
    6. Underwood is gone, do we keep P. Lee or is he cut?
    7. The Offensive Line? I believe Dietrich-Smith makes the 53-man roster (backup center and guard)…but, someone is getting cut…or should I say 2 or 3…Does Dominguez make the cut? Campbell? Newhouse?
    8. The defensive line…this will be interesting…

Also, who are the 8 we chose for the practice squad?

Some of the stats from tonight’s game were sickening…122 yards of total offense…an INT…4 or 5 fumbles…well under 100 yards passing…Flynn was 2 out of 10…no one ran the ball well save Ryan Grant…I hope that’s a harbinger for the regular season…I realize we mainly played the backups…this tells me our backup offensive line needs a lot of work…also, I prefer Harrell over Flynn…Saturday’s cuts will prove at least a few surprises…Also, expect us to target a defensive lineman and an offensive lineman off waivers…Any injuries?

I just saw on ESPN…the Packers release Brandon Underwood…I truly hope he catches on with another team.
