Why Resigning John Kuhn Was a Good Idea

By Ryan Richmond

Aside from being a hugely popular player with the fans, John Kuhn is the type of player that Coach McCarthy and Offensive Coordinator Philbin love to have at their disposal.

A player that can play multiple positions and give the offense a number of different looks, but maintaining a base player set. Flexibility of players like Kuhn allow the offense to run the hurry up offense more effectively by not having to switch out players to run different sets. In Kuhn, the offense gets a running back, a full back, and a tight end in one package.

I’ve read and heard it discussed in various media outlets how the loss of Brandon Jackson will impact the 3rd down production from the backfield. Jackson’s pass catching ability as well as his blitz pickups will be greatly missed.

With Kuhn, hopefully that impact will be lessened. Not only is Kuhn a good blocker, but he also has good hands as a pass catcher, and can pickup the short yardage first downs. Of his 87 carries in 2010, 28 of them were for first downs ( Stats). I feel that with Kuhn the third down package gets a wrinkle that wasn’t really there with Jackson, and that’s the threat of the run, especially in shorter yardage situations.

One possibility that excites me as a fan of smash-mouth, power football is the Packers three running back formation. How does it sound if the three running backs were Ryan Grant, James Starks, and John Kuhn? Or, for short yardages switch either Grant or Starks out for fullback Quinn Johnson? As a Packer fan it sounds like a good package.

My bet is opposing defenses won’t look at it with such excitement. I have very fond memories of the excitement I would get when William Henderson would catch a dump pass and rumble to the outside where some poor cornerback was waiting to be run over. When Kuhn catches a pass, the same excitement is there waiting for him to either run someone over, or hurdle them like he did to the Cowboys Barry Church.

As the season approaches I know there are Packer fans out there waiting to unleash their “KUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHNNNN” cheers this year!
