Packers hurting after injuries to key players on defense

Pro Football Weekly reports on the injury issues that are hitting the Packers right now, and how the team needs to find away to rally with key players down.

The fallout from the Packers’ way-too-close-for-comfort Week Four win over the Lions has put them in a precarious position, with two key defenders – rookie SS Morgan Burnett and MLB Nick Barnett – suffering season-ending knee and wrist injuries, respectively. The wrist injury to Barnett – which is similar to the one suffered by Bears MLB Brian Urlacher in Week One last year – presents a more serious problem for the Packers. Although daily team observers believe Barnett’s play had regressed this season, particularly when it came to rushing the passer, he was the defense’s emotional leader. His primary replacement figures to be Desmond Bishop, who is very physical and has a flair for playmaking but lacks speed and has real problems in coverage – a drawback that LB Brandon Chillar could effectively offset if his lingering shoulder injury allows him to do so.
