Packers Want Big Ten Title Game at Lambeau Field

Pro Football Talk reports that the Pack want the upcoming 2011 Big Ten Title Game to be played at Lambeau Field:

The Big Ten is expected to start playing a conference championship game in 2011, and the Green Bay Packers would like to host it.

“We’d be very interested,” Packers president Mark Murphy told ESPN.com. “The Big Ten has got such history and tradition, and to have a championship in Lambeau Field would be tremendous. It’d be good for our community and good for college football to have it in such a historic venue.”

Murphy, a former Northwestern athletic director who’s well-connected within the Big Ten, says the Packers have already contacted the Big Ten office to make the case that Lambeau Field is the right place for a Big Ten title game.

When the Packers released their financial information this week, Murphy noted that the team’s local revenues have been flat since 2007, and the Packers would like to increase their unshared revenue. So it makes sense for him to talk up Lambeau as a host venue, just as he did when he said the idea of a Super Bowl at Lambeau is “very intriguing.”

And it would make sense for other NFL teams in the Big Ten region — including the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns — to contact the Big Ten office as well.
