Jason Cole Ranks the Green Bay O-Line No. 23

Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole recently ranked the league’s offensive lines based on talent and depth. It’s probably no surprise to Packers fans that Green Bay’s offensive front ranked near the bottom of the list after the pounding quarterback Aaron Rodgers took last season. The Saints came in with the NFL’s top line, according to Cole’s rankings.

Here is what Cole had to say about the Packers line:

23. Green Bay Packers: When it came to keeping the quarterback clean, no playoff team was worse last year than the Packers, who ranked No. 30 in adjusted sacks per pass attempt. Only Oakland and Buffalo were worse. Of course, a lot of that falls on quarterback Aaron Rodgers(notes), who has a tendency to hold the ball too long in an effort to make a play. But the fact is that tackles Chad Clifton(notes) and Mark Tauscher(notes) were near the end last year, yet the Packers were so desperate that they re-signed Clifton to a long-term deal this offseason. At least this group showed that it can run the ball OK, ranking No. 8.

Injuries and inconsistency really hindered the Packers O-Line in 2009. Hopefully the unit will stay healthy this year and with the addition of first-round draft pick Bryan Bulaga, Rodgers should spend less time on his back this season.

Cole, do you watch the Packers play? They were horrible at the beginning of last year. As soon as Tauscher came back, they got a lot better. Then they got a top ten talent at LT. This is just another example of an “Expert” making a comment about something he knows nothing about.
