Jason Cole Ranks the Green Bay Running Backs No. 15

Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole recently ranked the league’s running backs based on talent and depth. While the Packers were rated in the middle of the road by Cole, NFC North rival Minnesota topped the charts, thanks in large part to the presence of Adrian Peterson.

Here is what Cole had to say about Ryan Grant and company:

15. Green Bay Packers: Ryan Grant(notes)has been a solid-yet-unspectacular player over the past two seasons. That’s not a bad thing, but he hasn’t exactly been what he flashed in the second half of the 2007 season, when he helped get the Packers to the NFC championship game. Then again, that’s why he was an undrafted guy long ago. The Packers are content with what they have for now, but Grant is never going to be a huge star and the depth is just so-so.

It’s hard to argue with Cole’s assessment. Grant is a solid player but he isn’t one of the elite runners in the NFL and the depth is suspect. However, a wild card could be rookie James Starks. I live in Upstate, NY and got to see Starks play quite a bit. The former Buffalo star would have been a much higher draft pick if he didn’t get hurt before the start of the 2009 season. Starks is a solid all-around back and if he stays healthy don’t be surprised if he pushes the inconsistent Brandon Jackson for playing time as Grant’s backup.

With James Starks abilities,Grant may very well do more for the Packers. He is not the grinder we need for the short game but with a viable asset in Starks makes it easier to achieve.
