Matthews Back on the Practice Field After Hamstring Pull

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports how rookie Clay Matthews was back on the practice field after pulling his hammy:

When last he was heard from, Green Bay Packers rookie Clay Matthews was lining up with the No. 1s at right outside linebacker, preparing for what looked to be a promising season. Three weeks and one hamstring pull later, the first-round pick was celebrating the fact that he was on the field again, albeit in a limited role without full pads. With the intent of getting him ready to be completely cleared next week, the medical staff allowed Matthews to run around a little bit.

He will not play against the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night in Phoenix, but the very fact that he was doing his work on Ray Nitschke Field with his teammates instead of inside the Don Hutson Center with the trainers was enough to feed his hunger. He felt he could have been cleared at the start of the work week, but the doctors have taken extra caution because this was his third left hamstring pull this year. “Obviously me and the doctors don’t get along that well,” Matthews joked. As for practice, Matthews said everything went as well as it could have.

  1. John Zoul says:

Clay matthews has had a recurring hamstring issue. He’s barely practiced and he has not played in any of the three preseason games. How do we know that suddenly, just before the season starts, that his hamstring is suddenly “healed?” We don’t. What’s the max number of players we can put on the PUP List?
Candidates certainly must include: Justin Harrell (herniated disc), Clay Matthews (Hamstring), Mike Montgomery (broken thumb), Aaron Rouse (Hamstring), Nick Barnett (recovering from torn ACL), and Matt Flynn (shoulder).
