Rodgers First Season Good; Needs 09 to be Better

Lions Packers Football
While the NFL world awaits the arrival of Brett Favre in a Vikings uniform, people seem to want to quickly dismiss just how good Favre’s replacement in Green Bay – Aaron Rodgers, did in his first season as a starter in Green Bay last year.

Yes, the Packers were not as good as the season before when they made it with Favre all the way to the NFC Title game, but Rodgers still had a solid season as a starter.

His QB rating was 93.8 in 16 games, and he threw for 4038 yards, 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also ran for 207 yards and 4 touchdowns in 56 attempts (12.9 yards per run). Not too bad taking over for a legend. Plus Rodgers had to answer a lot of the Favre questions going into camp, instead of being focused on being the legit starter for the Pack.

Rodgers numbers last season were better than Favre across the board. Favre’s QB rating was 81, with 3472 yards and 22 TD’s and 22 interceptions. Favre ran for just 43 yards and one TD as well. The 25-year-old Rodgers clearly outshined his 39-year-old mentor in every way last season – that is execpt for wins.

Favre’s Jets went 9-7 in his only season there. What will be more remembered though is the fact that the Jets started the year hot only to lose four of their last five games to end the year 9-7. Many around New York were not all that upset when Favre bailed after one year, an indication of how mad they were that he and the team faltered down the stretch.

The Packers were 5-5 after a 37-3 win over the Bears on November 16th, but then went into a swoon of their own, losing the next five games to drop to 5-10. In those five games, Rodgers threw 7 interceptions and 10 touchdowns, but the clubs crumbling defense did the offense no favors, allowing 150 points in those losses (30 points per game).

So as the 09 season gets closer, it will be interesting to see how Rodgers does in his second full season as a starter. If he repeats his 4000+ yard season with close to 30 touchdowns, it will only help Packer fans get past the Favre nightmare that appears is going to take place in Minnesota. Two wins over Favre’s Vikings wouldn’t hurt either.

If it was 12.9 YPC, it must have been 16 attempts, not 56.
