In quite a turnaround from just a few days back when it seemed he was not taking the position, the Packers have landed coaching vet Dom Capers as their new defensive coordinator. The 58-year-old Capers has 38 years of coaching experience, including 23 years in the National Football League. He has been a defensive coordinator seven of those years (Pittsburgh, ’92-’94; Jacksonville 1999-2000; and Miami ’06-’07) and head coach nine of them (Carolina 1995-’98 and Houston 2001-’05).
The deal came about after head coach Mike McCarthy spent part of the day on Friday and Saturday talking about defensive ideas and which way the Packers D would go from here on in. Capers accepted McCarthy’s offer on Sunday evening according to reports.
The Pack talked to a number of potential coaches before Capers finally accepted the job. Among them included former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, former Jacksonville defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and former St. Louis defensive coordinator and interim coach Jim Haslett. Nolan took a job in Denver, Williams took a job in New Orleans and Haslett is still available.

I think that this is a good hire. The Packer nation needs to get on the bandwagon and start screaming for the amazing 3-4 free agent crop this year. A few names for you: Ray Lewis, Julius Peppers, Bart Scott, Terrell Suggs, Eric Barton, Mike Peterson, and Angelo Crowell would ALL be upgrades at the hybrid OLB or ILB. Suggs and Haynesworth HAVE to be our BIGGEST priority though. Jordan Gross may be franchised, but if not, he would be an upgrade at OT before the draft as well. The Pack HAVE to upgrade either LB, OT, or DT BEFORE the draft. Lets start it now Packer Nation!
