Packers Merchandise Sales Down 15 Percent

From: Boston Herald

A sports apparel manufacturing representative who asked that his name not be used said the timing of the Brett Favre departure couldn’t have been worse. Many stores had put in huge orders for inventory the previous December, figuring the Packers would be competitive and Favre would either be playing or would be retired as a Packer. Instead, the worst of all scenarios occurred. Favre left and the economy started to dip.

“You have a split fan base, because your Hall of Fame quarterback gets shipped out of town,” the manufacturing rep said. “You get people calling in and they’re mad at how it was all handled. You can argue both sides were at fault, but when you have a split fan base like that, it causes a reduction in sales early in the year. “It’s usually a promising time and everyone thinks their team has a chance to make the playoffs. It’s an opportunity to move a lot of product.” In general, the rep said, his sales are down 10% to 15% from a normal year.
